History

In many ways, New Covenant is a young church with a long history. The members of New Covenant are the heirs of a rich history of faithfulness and perseverance on the part of the members that have come before them, as well as the beneficiaries of the Lord’s sovereign guidance through many twists and turns.

Although our history could be traced back even further, our story really begins in the 1960’s. At that time, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Cecil Williamson, the congregation of the historic Alabama Avenue Presbyterian Church decided to relocate to West Selma and establish a church on the property where New Covenant now stands. The church was named Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church and would continue ministry under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Williamson for many years.

In 2013, Woodland Heights Presbyterian Church, under the leadership of Rev. George Birchler, and Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church agreed to a union of the two churches. The congregation of Woodland Heights sold their property on Highland Avenue and purchased the Crescent Hill property. After the move to Crescent Hill, the church was renamed New Covenant Presbyterian Church.

After the union of the churches, Rev. Birchler accepted a call from another church and Rev. Williamson retired.  Dr. Joseph Carmichael served as the stated supply of New Covenant from 2015 until 2018. After his departure, and a lengthy pastoral search process, the Lord brought Rev. Michael Perry to New Covenant in 2020.
